Dubai-based DP World: The Situation
A CORPORATE AGENDA THAT THREATENS PUBLIC ACCOUNTABILITY AND ECONOMIC DEMOCRACY
CCHL is entertaining a proposal to privatise the operations of Lyttelton Port to Dubai Port World. D.P. World operates ports all over the world, and has a ruthless reputation. It has avoided paying tax on $4.5 billion of income over 8 years and fails to comply with employment law.
For example, D.P. World unlawfully terminated its entire P&O British work force, to do this they abruptly suspended operations without notice and expelled the workers using ex-military security guards.
D.P. World fired the workers because it was cheaper to pay the fines for doing so than to pay fair wages.
D.P. World is directly controlled by the Dubai Royal Family (oil oligarchs). The proposal being considered by CCHL would place Lyttleton Port under the control of a company that intimidates its workers by docking wages, sackings, revoking leave and bonuses, and attacking democratic rights.
This runs counter to Kiwi values and our commitment to human rights. Let's not become a part of their plan for global logistics oligarchy.
